This pattern can reflect fine texture, compaction, grading, shallow usable soil, construction disturbance, seasonal water, or several conditions together.
Do not immediately add sand or pumice
Small arbitrary sand additions are not a universal clay solution. Pumice can contribute to recipes, but it does not create an outlet where water has nowhere to go.
Diagnose the site
Dig in several locations, inspect the profile, observe where water collects, and separate structure, compaction, grade, drainage, and missing-soil problems.
Diagnose first, then choose the remedy
A wet, compacted or disturbed site may need investigation before it needs material.
