Custom media begins with a real production or specification requirement. Specialty Soils evaluates standard products first, then develops or reproduces a formula when the need is justified.

Can you copy an approved formula?
Discuss the approved formula, version, ownership, documentation and repeat-order requirements. Specialty Soils will review what can be reproduced.
Do I need custom media if I want premium quality?
No. Custom is appropriate when standard products do not adequately meet a defined system requirement.
What should I provide for a supplied specification?
Send the complete current specification, project, required documents, testing, acceptable substitutions, quantity, schedule and delivery plan.
Will private recipes be shown publicly?
No. Proprietary customer formulas and private business information should remain confidential.

Understand the system
Gather crop, stage, container, duration, irrigation, fertility, environment, current medium, current problem, desired behavior, format, volume and document requirements.
Review standard products
Use an existing active formula when it adequately fits the requirement.
Define performance
Describe dry-down, water holding, air space, stability, handling, propagation or duration needs without inventing numeric targets.
Develop a candidate
Create a candidate formulation only when the documented requirement justifies it.
Trial
Evaluate the candidate with a representative crop, container and management system.
Review and adjust
Make intentional, documented changes based on trial observations and the original objective.
Approve a version
Assign and preserve the approved formula or version so repeat orders refer to the same controlled product.
