The right depth depends on crop rooting, the soil underneath, drainage, and bed construction. There is no single useful depth for every bed.
Start below the bed
A bed over usable native soil behaves differently from an isolated planter. If roots can continue below the frame, the board height is not necessarily the required imported-soil depth.
Consider the whole system
- Crop rooting depth
- Condition of soil below
- Drainage and grade
- Bed construction and barriers
Deeper is not automatically better
Do not purchase unnecessary material merely to fill every inch of a tall decorative frame. Measure actual internal dimensions and the root-zone depth the project needs.
Plan the complete raised-bed project
Separate new fill, existing-bed improvement and quantity before choosing a product.
